I’ve never been a big fan of music videos, always preferring to focus on the lyrics instead. I’ve always loved lyrics that could tell a good, compelling story. Yet with Anjelica’s new song, I’m forced to pay attention to both, as they’re both equally good.

The song, simply entitled “Good Ones”, serves as a sort of eulogy for her departed mother and grandfather, the good ones to which the song is dedicated. The lyrics themselves surprised me through their authenticity and their crystal-clear honesty. There are no frills around “Good Ones”, nothing romantic about death, just the vividly painted struggle of a girl who’s lost her family. Of being forced to grow up without the ones who gave you the strength to move on.

The lyrics in themselves had me listening with my eyes closed about five times, in a loop, savouring the complexity and yet, the stunning simplicity of it all. “Good Ones” is a song that feels like a comforting hug when you feel like your heart is breaking, and I think that as an artist, that is by no means an easy thing to do.

But what surprised me was the power and the almost perfect realization of the music video. The title shot in the beginning somehow manages to convey an inappropriate feeling of celebration and happiness, that the rest of the video quickly dispels with shots of a mourning Anjelica.

We see her looking through photos of her family, putting them up on a wall, like building an altar, a monument in these people’s memory. There is something indescribably powerful in that shot.

But then, we see the artist crouching on a couch, in the sort of fetal position that we tend to assume when we’ve got no strength left. When we’re just trying to breathe. And it’s so well shot, this scene, that you kinda feel a pang of pain in your own stomach. It makes you relate to her, and feel like you’ve lost someone, too. And on the off-chance you have, this song is the perfect song to grieve to. You know why? Because it gives you strength.

It’s a very subtle sort of empowerment, yet it’s there nevertheless, helping you find the thread you needed to hold on to in order to survive.

It’s very rare, I think, to find a tune where the music video is as good as the song itself, and actually manages to compliment the message of the lyrics. Yet that’s exactly what Anjelica’s “Good Ones” felt like for me.
